FIELD NOTE / PRE-DEVELOPMENT

OEM hardware with SDK/API access

How to screen finished OEM devices for real software leverage: SDKs, APIs, protocols, firmware customization and integration evidence.

01

Search the exact product, not the category

“Smart device” is too broad. The question is whether the exact finished SKU exposes a usable software surface.

02

Look for multiple software signals

Useful signals include SDK downloads, API documentation, secondary-development language, protocol documentation, firmware customization, ONVIF, MQTT, BLE characteristics or vendor app integration.

03

Match the interface to the product idea

An API is only valuable if it exposes the data or controls the product actually needs. A cloud API, local network protocol and embedded SDK solve different problems.

04

Ask supplier questions that can fail

Request SDK/API documents, supported platforms, sample code, firmware-customization scope, minimum order quantities for customization, and whether access changes by SKU or chipset.

05

Build differentiation above the hardware

When the physical base is already good enough, value can move into workflow software, vertical UX, analytics, computer vision, AI, integrations and service design instead of another enclosure-and-PCB cycle.

Test the market before you fund the hardware.

The first 3-device signal check is free. If the evidence is weak, stop there. If there is a credible manufactured path, the full 48-hour scout is $349.
